The Program
The idea is to create a semester-long internship program for juniors, seniors and recent graduates. A group of roughly two dozen students - actors, designers, managers and technicians - would come together for four months in an intensive, collaborative theatre experience, culminating in the production of a play for the public.
Under the guidance of a professional director and a staff of advisors, the students would have full creative and managerial control over their production. We’d provide them with a script, a budget, and a warehouse equipped with rehearsal, shop and performance spaces, and let them at it. They would be responsible for everything from allocating and managing their budget, to desiging and building the production, to coming up with a cohesive marketing plan, designing flyers and posters, and running the box office during performances.
The students would be encouraged to work as though they were in a typical professional theatre setting. While allowing them to keep a regular schedule, we would also provide the occasional seminar or workshop with local theatre professionals, and they would be encouraged to explore the rich culture of San Francisco in their free time.

This sounds a lot like what we senior dancers are doing to put on our BFA thesis concert series at UIUC. We have an advisor who’s overseeing our work and making suggestions, but it’s very much up to us how we choose to structure and manage our concerts. It’s a great feeling, and I wish more people got to experience it. Go Drama Farm!
